"You must not for one instant give up the effort to build new lives for yourselves." - Daisaki Ikeda I am putting this quote here because I feel as though a lot of like-minded people I know do not put enough effort into the things we know we ought to be doing, such as recycling rigorously. I'm guilty of this too. Whenever I've thrown something recyclable away, I have had this internal dialogue in the back of my mind about how it is okay this once, because I am too small to make a difference in the big picture. However, sorry to use a quote bordering on cliche but, we must "Be the change you want to see in the world." (Ghandi) Most people recognize the truth in that phrase, which must be why it is so widely quoted, but few people actually take it to heart. I am going to be more serious about making my own actions reflect more clearly my views - especially in regards to the health and future of our one and only planet Earth. I took the Ecological Footprint test again today. My score was 13, which is less than it was when I took it for the first time a few years ago (at the time it was a 17) but still far from ideal. - RECYCLE MORE
- Reuse the shopping bags you already have, and try to use your own bags from now on (ie. carry around a tote that you can fold up and store in you car/book bag/purse, or buy cool collapsible bags here)
- Use less hot water
- Dry your clothes on a line rather than in the dryer
- Drive Less - carpool, combine trips (plan what you need to accomplish ahead of time), use mass transit
- Ride a bike
- Leave lights off during the day - open the blinds and/or windows
- Use cloth napkins
- Adjust your thermostat - leave it off as often as possible.
- Avoid products that use a lot of packaging
- Turn off electronics
- Use old notes and such as scrap paper before you throw them away.
- Disable your microwave clock
- Avoid Styrofoam
- Reuse zip-lock baggies a few times before disposing of them - they can be washed if necessary.
- Scrape and compost food waste from plates rather than rinsing and using the disposal.
- Operate the dishwasher only when completely full. It uses 14-30 gallons per wash. Use the appropriate water level or load size selection in the washing machine.
- Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving and save 4 gallons a minute..
- Time your shower to keep it under 5 minutes. You'll save up to 1000 gallons a month.
- Take fewer, shorter showers.

This society wants you to believe that if you have money you'll be happy, but that is ridiculous. No matter how much you have, it will never be enough to buy happiness. You have to do what you love, and if you do the energy and motivation with follow - that way at least you will be happy.
Getting a college education, even just a bachelor's degree, used to be an advantage in the job market. But in our generation, getting a bachelor's degree has become ubiquitous, and therefore a necessity rather than an advantage. A master's degree is what a bachelor's used to be.
I've got to figure out what I want to do now, because within the first three years out of college you essentially determine your hire-ablity. When applying for a professional job, at many corporations and business your resume will be trashed immediately if you haven't worked at any job for 2 years or more. From a business point of view, this makes sense because the cost to the employer for training and such makes it so that you don't earn them any money for the first 6 months or so, and you don't earn a return on their 'investment' in you until around the two year mark.
Keep in mind that I'm talking about professional work, and there are obvious exceptions. As for me, I intend to work in a professional field. When I think about the kind of lifestyle I want to have in the future, I will need a professional salary to obtain it. After discussing it with Rick throughout the day he was over, I've come up with this list of my ideal lifestyle qualities:

- walkable/bike-rideable community
- centrally located among places of commerce and entertainment
- access to major city/cultural center
- access to major international airport
- decent to good mass transit infrastructure
- money for travel
要らないもの (don't need)
- a nice car
- a big place
- malls
- lots of (fancy) stuff
- money for shopping
More thoughts on this to come. I am still working through it. It has been decided that I am going to be a professional. But a professional what?
